The Mystery of the Piano
footnote

We originally acquired the piano from my stepmother.  It had been in their basement for as long as I knew her kids (at that point, about 15 years) and never played.  After she married my dad, it became mine for nothin'.  I loaded it (with help) into a U-Haul, and I-Hauled it to C'ville. We used it for my last two years (one in Preston, and one in Cambridge).  I lived with Smiley O'Marsland both years.  I recall moving it between the apartments with Tom, Grady, and some others.  It was only a hundred yards or so, so we dragged it across the parking lot, maneuvered it down a hill, across some grass, and ultimately into the Cambridge apartment.

I seem to recall that upon my departure, Ms. Kelly O'Brien (my then-girlfriend) took posession.  It was she what painted it black (prior to that it had been a combination of vomit-tinged ecru and baby-sh*t brown).  Dink Demme took it next, and it ultimately ended up with a Tara Tyler (who works for the U).  Demme knew her somehow.  When I, in 1996, bought a house in Lancaster, PA, I established contact with Ms. Tyler.  For some time, she seemed interested in helping me regain my instrument.  When I got down to actually planning to get it, she quit returning my calls.  She's still at the U (director of something or other -- search the directory), and, as far as I know, still has the Piano.

It was a fine thing.  Held tune pretty well, and yielded such arrangements as: Mary (Take 6), Shock the Monkey (TB + Grady + Dennis Callahan) and the National Anthem (do the B'hoos still use that arrangement?  It sure was keen).

I've moved on to Seattle, and don't have much use for a piano on the east coast.  If anyone wants to investigate further, or if the bhoos want to recover their lost treasure, Ms. Tyler is the place to start (be gentle).
